Update from the Board

(adapted from the report by Tori Jones, March 15th)

Well, a lot has been happening over the past six months. Some of it has been behind the scenes, so we want to bring you up to date on a few things. Sunday’s bulletin notes that Marg Torrance and I have returned to the Board; this allows Tish Buckley and Alex Chapman to focus their energies in other directions.
Secondly, you may have noticed that we are making some changes in our financial reporting that will hopefully clarify a number of issues, and lower your concerns. We had been reporting our budget forecast, drafted last summer. Because of staffing reductions and other reductions in spending, we are in much better financial position than the weekly bulletin had been reporting. Having said that, Stewardship and increasing our givings will still be important as we go forward. Check the new numbers in Sunday’s bulletin (and in the weeks ahead). We will be giving you regular reports of our Year-To-Date, (income and expenses) for a more accurate picture of Wellington Square’s financial situation.
Thirdly, concerning our Building Renovation project. As you know, last summer the congregation voted in favour of moving forward to the next step of the project. Since then, there have been several meetings with the architects, the city, geo-thermal and environmental assessors, for the purpose of reviewing the plans, get city approvals, test soil etc. The blueprints are being finished and will be put out to building contractors for bidding.
When the Capital Campaign was completed we had just over $2 million pledged, and the project has been scaled to fit that budget, including any costs for financing. While interest rates, and most materials and construction costs have dropped since then, and that is good, we also recognize that the downturn in the economy will affect some peoples financial situation.
Our intention is to continue to share information with you, and move forward carefully. We want to work together, and allow donors to adapt and adjust to their personal situation, so that we remain comfortable with each decision, and go forward as a unified congregation. At the beginning of April, the plans will go out to tender, and we will receive bids from local contractors who are willing to complete the build. After a few weeks to review the bids, we will be having a congregational meeting to have the final vote on the “green light/red light” to undertake this project. This will take place some time in mid-May.
In the meantime, we want to allow everyone the opportunity to ask questions of the building and capital campaign committees as well as the Board. We want to honour God and our community of faith in this whole process, and ensure that our decision is a prayerful and informed one, so we would encourage you to ask your questions by either:
1) submitting it to the “Questions about the Build” box that will be outside of St. Paul’s Hall
2) contacting any member of the Board by e-mail, phone or in person
In the next two months, we hope to regularly post a “Q & A” in response to your questions, and keep the dialogue open as we head into this very important congregational meeting in May.

Lastly, I want to say – Marg & I are happy to be able to be part of your BOARD again, and on behalf of the rest of the BOARD –Tony Wilson, Sharon Mosher, Joyce Pearson, Bruce Magwood, Brian Vickers, Lauretta Weir, Katie & Orville (all listed on the About Us page of this website)… About Us
