September 18, 2007 was the 41st anniversary of the opening of Wellington Square’s building. In 1966, Lester Pearson was Prime Minister and no one had even heard of Pierre Trudeau yet. A new hockey season was just beginning in which the Toronto Maple Leafs would win the Stanley Cup. That was a long time ago, wasn’t it? This great building was opened to serve a new congregation, and the Burlington community. What a heritage we have to preserve, and to continue.
Since that time, thousands of lives have been shaped by the events held here. Weekly worship. Weddings. Baptisms. Funerals. Thousands of children have been introduced to the Christian story, and have gone out into life, knowing of a God who ‘so loves the world that He gave his Son Jesus,’ to ‘reconcile and make new.’
Now we’re going to continue the story. In the coming year we’ll be renewing this building for the future; expanding classroom and meeting rooms, upgrading the technologies to be more efficient and environmentally friendly, achieving numerous improvements and additions.
Doug Lawless and Bette Park are our Honorary Chairs. They know the Wellington Square story and have been a part of it for decades. Russ Jackson is Chair of the Capital Campaign. He’s guiding a team (including Tim Tufford, Paul Mackey, Don Smith, Steve Gray, Bryan Webber and John Lewis) that over the fall and winter will get the story out, answer your questions, and help us discover how we can be involved in making it all happen.
Forty-one years ago, Wellington Square was created by people who had a vision of something beautiful for God. Now we’re renewing that vision of faith and mission for the future. God is at work here. Stay tuned. — by Orville James
It is my honour and pleasure to serve as Chair of your Capital Campaign Committee. Wellington Square United Church has been a place of worship for many families over the past four decades. It is now time to refurbish and expand our present facilities to better serve today’s congregation and certainly provide for the future growth in our church. No plan to do this work will satisfy everyone but I strongly believe that the plan presently in place deserves the support of all of us to enhance and nourish our need to worship.
I was privileged to chair the Building Committee that planned and built the church that was dedicated as Wellington Square United Church in September 1966. When asked a few years ago to sit on the Facilities Committee, I agreed for the same reasons as in the early 1960s — to examine the physical needs of the church in view of the present and futureneeds of the congregation.
I am a strong supporter of the present redevelopment plan. It meets the present and foreseeable future needs of the congregation. I am gratified to be an Honourary Chair of the Capital Campaign, and plan to be active in canvassing for financial support. I look forward to visiting some of the congregation and I hope and pray that all members will support the campaign.
Our campaign is about stewardship. Our material and financial resources, our time, relationships, and abilities are God’s free gifts to us. Stewardship is a term to describe ourresponsibilities in managing God’s resources.
The key to a successful campaign is sacrificial giving. Sacrificial giving will mean something different to each person. Not equal gifts, but equal sacrifice is required. Your gift, your sacrifice will become an eternal investment as it continues to support ministries in our church and community, changing lives and equipping future generations for many years to come.
We as a congregation need to seize the moment; now is the time for this building to be renewed for the needs of today and the requirements of the generation approaching. We are asking you to partner with God in opening the door to the future for our congregation.
Together, it is possible for our congregation to raise the $2.3 million goal for this project. With God’s lead, we are confident of reaching and even surpassing our goal.
