Renovation Project Q & A’s

Why was Pine School asked to leave?

Pine School was asked to leave this year due to vigilance for student safety during construction. This would also allow for additional permanent classrooms for GraceLand.

Are our number of regular attendees down from last year?

Our number of regular attendees as recorded with the United Church this year are up from 465 in 2007 to 477 in 2008. Some of these are newcomers who are investigating Christianity and Wellington Square.

Is the organ in need of repair and are there funds to cover that?

Yes, there is a designated organ fund that will cover any repairs from year to year as needs are indicated by the Music Director.

How can the new reception room act effectively as both two classrooms and a meeting room?

A room divider is included in the plan. With the reduced scale of the project, GraceLand leaders feel they can make effective use of the new meeting room.

Will those who have already made pledges be asked whether their pledge still stands before the congregational vote?

Yes, a letter will go out to confirm pledges after we receive the bids and before the vote.

Will there be a Capital Reserve fund begun to set aside money for repairs in the future?

The Stewardship Team is currently developing a strategy to establish and maintain such a fund in the future.

Are general operating costs being covered now with givings?

No, we are currently not meeting our operating costs with givings.

How many years in the past five has Wellington Square ended without a deficit?

Wellington Square has ended one year of the last five without a deficit.

Can we have a definitive answer as to how much of the roof will be replaced during the renovation?

The plan being presented will provide for a new roof from the present GraceLand office to Katie’s office.

Other than the new geo-thermal heating, have there been any upgrades to the remaining heat source, i.e. boilers, planned for?

No other upgrades in this project. Some preliminary information has been gathered as to our needs going forward, and the future will bring ongoing maintenance to the areas not served by the geothermal heating source.

Do the changes in the sanctuary allow for a permanent setup for the bands so to reduce volunteer time each week?

Yes, permanent electrical outlets will be installed under the new staging area. The drum kit will be moved most weeks, and choir seating may be moved most weeks.

Will changes allow for easier accessibility for seniors and the disabled?

Yes, one of the stated goals is complete accessibility for wheelchairs.

Will the large stained glass window in Sanctuary be safe during construction?

Yes, there is no construction slated under or around the main stained glass window.

Please note that because of unavoidable delays with the architect, the congregational meeting and vote will not be able to take place until the middle of June 2009.
