Downtown Community Dinner

Who attends the dinners?

Although the dinners are hosted at Wellington Square, a number of different church groups in the Burlington community serve and contribute in many ways. We also have friends in the community who come to help. We welcome people of all ages including teens and older children. Our guests come from Burlington and Hamilton and are men, women and children in need of a hot and nutritious meal and/or fellowship. Our friends could be those who are living in transient housing conditions, those suffering from ongoing mental illnesses, single parents, those living below the poverty line who cannot make ends meet, or those who are lonely and are looking to connect with people who care.

How can I get involved with the dinners?

You can arrange to have a group come in to prepare, serve and clean up (approximately 8 people for each shift) or come on your own and join in the fun. We are also always in need of juice boxes and lunch snack donations (fruit cups, apple sauce, cookies, granola bars, etc.), which we give out to the children who attend, to help in filling their lunches at school. We collect a limited number of gently used clothes and small household items, which we provide free of charge for the guests. We have two shifts for volunteering (prep from 4-6 pm and clean up from 6-8 pm). Please sign up on the white board most Sundays at Wellington Square or e-mail llunski-wood@wsquare.ca Contact

Where does the food come from and who pays for it?

Our coordinators set the meal plan and buy the food based on what donations we have available. We do put out a ‘free will offering’ box at the dinners in the hopes that volunteers are able to donate to help cover some of the costs of the meals. We are thankful for food donations from Partnership West Food Bank, local grocery stores and the Poacher Restaurant to help keep our costs down. Monetary donations from various churches, small groups, and friends in the community are an integral part in making the dinners possible. We are excited about an upcoming opportunity to receive free food from Refresh Foods here in Burlington.

We have a further opportunity to get involved in providing bags of food free of charge to our neediest guests at the dinners. If you are interested in getting involved by helping to sort and bag these items every Friday please let me know.

Thank you for your ongoing support in helping to make these dinners possible!
