I have been reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also. For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline. — 2 Timothy 1:5-7 (NIV)
… about this parenting business.
The whole parenting role evolves and changes as time passes. When it starts, a mom (or dad) can wonder if they will ever get past the constant care and feeding of the baby, the lack of sleep, and just the general chaos. From my experience as a parent, the days were long but the years were short.
In the beginning, we can recall in detail nearly every event. And if we don’t remember all the specifics, we can always look back at the pictures we took – first steps, first birthday, each little growth and progress.
As time rolls, we add to the mental file – first day of school, vacation trips, periods of challenge and illness; and then suddenly we’ve passed 20 years, in a blink. The days are long, but the years are short.
Will that make us a little sad? Do we want it to last forever? Well, not the midnight feedings and diapers, or the skinned knees and tonsils. Parenting forever is not God’s plan – we have a little while, a short season, of responsibility and delight. But only God is a Forever Parent. Jesus had lost his earthly father, Joseph, and grew beyond his earthly mother, Mary. In his spiritual wisdom, Jesus looked to his Heavenly Father. So should we. “They will perish, but you remain; they will wear out like a garment … But you remain the same, and your years will never end. The children of your servants will live in your presence.” Psalm 102:26-28
As much as we pour ourselves into the next generations, they do not belong to us. Love them; give them to God. And be at peace. — ORVILLE
