I’ve Been Thinking…

…about rest & recovery. Most runners know that you should always take a day off in your training, and that you should also train in cycles –after a long hard period, or a big race (a marathon?) you cut way back and let yourself recover. It’s a principle that is probably universally true. The term sabbatical, comes from the ancient concept of Sabbath (day of rest). Every living thing can benefit from recognizing and following this principle.
Katie preaches today, and then tomorrow begins a sabbatical. The United Church is now suggesting that every minister take a ‘sabbath rest’ period after 5 years of service. The reality is that for many ministers, because they get fewer weekends off, spiritual leadership can be a ‘marathon’, a long hard run, that wears on body and spirit.
This is Katie’s first sabbatical since she was ordained 27 years ago. During her rest time she will do some reading, and is planning to attend a conference learning event at John Ortberg’s Presbyterian church in the San Francisco Bay area. Hopefully she will also get some very relaxed ‘down time’ with family, and friends.
So we pray blessings on her, Mike and the family as they enter this season. We pray safe travels, and restful, renewing and productive time for her, from now through Labour Day.
And for all of you – may you find the way to rest and renew your body and soul, so that you run the race with joy.
Blessings to you and yours… ORVILLE
