Letters to a Fledgling Movement: Part 1

Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, To the church of God that is in Corinth, to those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, together with all those who in every place call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, both their Lord and ours: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

When I came to you, brothers and sisters, I did not come proclaiming the mystery of God to you in lofty words or wisdom. For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and him crucified. so that your faith might rest not on human wisdom but on the power of God.

For I handed on to you as of first importance what I in turn had received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures, and that he was buried, and that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures, But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have died. For since death came through a human being, the resurrection of the dead has also come through a human being; for as all die in Adam, so all will be made alive in Christ.

— 1 Corinthians 1:1a,2-3,2:1-2,5, 15:3-4, 20-22

I’ve Been Thinking …

… ahead, into our summer. Today, we’re starting a great series of sermons on the Letters of the New Testament. Ever wonder who the heck were the Romans? And those Corinthians – what was their problem?
Actually, you probably didn’t wonder! Not surprising. Most of us have never had time (or a good source) to learn about all these letters to weirdly named places –“Thessalonians, Galatians, c’mon. I can’t even pronounce it, let alone understand it.” EXACTLY.
So we’re going to make it fun and interesting; give you a little background and insight to these ‘Letters to a Fledgling Movement.’ Using a different letter each week, we’ll examine the situation behind it – the location, the culture, the questions being asked, the problems early Christ followers were facing. And then we’ll pick the highlight message, the ‘take-away’ that you can walk out with, to inspire or guide you in living well today. So here’s the line-up. Consider reading ahead before each Sunday.
