Sunday is Father’s Day so I want to highlight the influence fathers have in raising their children. True or False: “Fathers play a more important role in the lives of their sons than they do in the lives of their daughters?”
My response: “It’s definitely False.” When Leslie, our oldest, was born, I really didn’t know what a dad/daughter dynamic was going to be. And now 30 years later, I shout from a mountaintop that daughters need and deserve full engagement from their dads.
Fathers raise confidence levels in their daughters. Fathers convince daughters that they can overcome the gender limits that still exist in our society today. Fathers teach daughters how men should treat women. Fathers demonstrate to daughters how life can be lived with God at the center, whether you’re male or female. And the list could just go on as to how important a dad is in the life of a daughter. Fathers play a massively important role in the lives of their little girls.
Of course, the same could be said for fathers and sons. Fathers play a very significant role in the lives of their sons. Dads teach boys that there’s more to masculinity than bravado and drinking beer. Dads teach sons that respecting woman and protecting the defenseless is just standard operating procedure for men.
The point I want to make is that dads have massive impact on sons and daughters. Fathers need to engage fully in the raising of both. There’s no replacement for what a dad brings to both boys and girls. So whether you had a dad, or you’re married to a dad, or you are a dad … Happy Father’s Day!
With love,
Orville
