“Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.” —Colossians 4:5,6
Earlier this week I was asked how many ‘candidates for ministry’ our congregation has. Apparently there is a shortage looming in the Canadian church. But there are also some very good candidates in preparation, or serving in some capacity. Sunday we have Karen Eade helping to lead our 11 a.m. worship service. Karen grew up here at Wellington Square, was part of the children’s, then youth, and confirmation programs.
She went away to university to achieve her B.A., and now is in the midst of her theological studies (for a Master of Divinity). This summer she is taking specialized training in chaplaincy and pastoral care work at St Catharines General Hospital. She has already served as a student chaplain at Joseph Brant hospital. Karen has conducted funerals, and done much counseling and care-giving. Next Sunday she will preach here at both services.
Wellington Square has several others who have recently begun to serve in church leadership. Brian Vickers was a candidate from Wellington Square, and served here several times during his training period. He married Mardi Miller last year, and is presently serving at Lundy’s Lane United in Niagara Falls.
Brian Martin completed his theological degree and is serving a community church up in Huron County. He and his wife Heather just became parents last month.
Our fourth recent ministry candidate is Heather Joy James. She is serving as an intern at a United Church in Whitby. Heather will return to Emmanuel College in September for her last year of classroom study.
The church of Jesus Christ does need strong professional leadership – ministers. AND as todays scripture and sermon indicate, the church is strongest when it is a total team effort, of active, serving, witnessing lay volunteers, and the ‘hired pros’.
Thank you for what You do, in Jesus name, and blessings to all our student and rookie ministers.
With Love… ORVILLE
