… about our planet’s health. The oil well in the Gulf is finally capped. Damage will linger for years, maybe decades. That’s the worst man-made disaster in recent memory, but maybe only because it is visible and somewhat measurable. There are so many other quiet environmental problems slowly mounting. The Burlington Post reports on the disappearing agricultural land around us; there is pollution caused by people and industry, the growing landfills, and the carbon and ozone problems in our air. In summer’s heat, some of us feel guilty about using air conditioning. We recycle everything we can, but as individuals, we are caught in a system and culture that made lazy, selfish and short-sighted decisions decades ago that will take time to correct. And we’ve been spoiled with affluence. So pray.
Pray confession for our past and present lavish lunacy. Pray for personal wisdom and self-discipline to reduce/reuse/recycle as much as possible. Pray for political will and wisdom to make decisions that alter our culture to be less damaging. And yet, also pray with Thanksgiving and hope, that the Gulf of Mexico will heal (slowly) and that industry, government and all of us will have learned a lesson, and begin to change.
With love, ORVILLE
