Now here’s a surprise: The master praised the crooked manager! And why? Because he knew how to look after himself. Streetwise people are smarter in this regard than law-abiding citizens. They are on constant alert, looking for angles, surviving by their wits. I want you to be smart in the same way — using every adversity to stimulate you to creative survival, to concentrate your attention on the bare essentials, so you’ll live, really live, and not complacently just get by on good behaviour.
— Luke 16:8-10 (The Message)
… how new seasons bring new possibilities. What’s new in your life this fall? Has anything changed? Are you trying something different? Maybe you have new neighbours who moved in this summer; kind of exciting and an adventure to get to know new people, isn’t it? Maybe someone in your household is launching in a new direction – school? Sports team? Different job? Often over the summer people move, or retire and the landscape changes.
It’s kind of the same around a church. New seasons bring new possibilities. Especially in fall, Jesus’ team always has opportunities. Try something new – a study group, a volunteer position, a different seat in the church? Mix it up – move around – get a fresh perspective – meet someone else.
What’s possible? The Adult Faith Development team has put together a great brochure available here>> that lists all kinds of opportunities. Explore something that might be fun and a growth experience.
What else? Do you enjoy helping?
Being an important part of a team? What are you good at? What are you curious about? There’s a task for you. One of our long-time volunteer coffee makers has a family illness that keeps her out of town. A business guy is retiring from a finance committee. A power point operator is now a student minister preaching in another church this fall. A youth leader stepped over to another church ministry. See what I mean – life happens, and every season positions change, opportunities open up. Can you make coffee? Understand insurance? Operate a computer? Listen and laugh with teens? All over the church a new season brings new possibilities. Find your spot – go for it. Enjoy the fall ahead.
