The angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favour with God.” In that region there were shepherds living in the fields. The angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for see — I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people.” — Luke 1:30, Luke 2:8a,10
... of the positive power of Christmas music. It can calm us, inspire us, move us to tears, or fill us with Joy.
Are there songs that you look forward to singing each year? Ones that have special meaning? Maybe they rekindle a special memory – of a time or place. Maybe the words say something that touches deep within.
“Yet in the dark streets shineth,
the everlasting light,
The hopes and fears of all the years
are met in thee tonight.”
Each year that gives voice to a yearning in me.
Our theme for this season is the Carols of Christmas. Between now and January 2nd (including 4 services on Christmas Eve), we’re going to examine seven different carols, to reflect on their message and their impact.
This Sunday, as we begin the Advent/Christmas season, I’m hoping to unpack the old English carol “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen.” It’s not very gender inclusive, it sounds a little sexist, but it does have a helpful challenge for us – ‘let nothing you dismay.’ Really?! Just what dismays? and How do we negate its impact? That’s what we’ll explore this Sunday.
Next Sunday after our GraceLand children delight us with their Christmas worship presentation, Katie will use the carol “Hark the Herald Angels Sing” to delve into the mystery and magic of the angels of the Christmas season. There is wonder, awe, trepidation and hope in the appearance of these mysterious messengers from God.
Come and worship each week, as we sing and reflect on the Carols of Christmas.
With love, ORVILLE
