I’ll get to that in a minute –but here’s something to tickle your curiosity. This year is the earliest Easter (March 23) any of us will ever see the rest of our lives! And only the most elderly of our population have ever seen it this early (95 years old or above!). Here are the facts:
The next time Easter will be this early will be the year 2228 (220 years from now). The last time it was this early was 1913 so if you’re 95 or older, you are the only ones that were around for that! No one alive today has or will ever see it any earlier than this year!
Easter is always the 1st Sunday after the 1st full moon after the Spring Equinox (which is March 20). This dating of Easter is based on the lunar calendar that Hebrew people used to identify Passover (their escape from slavery in Egypt, about 1500B.C.).
Whether you are Jewish, or Christian, it’s all about God. How God has intervened to rescue and redeem His people (from slavery, from sin & death). By definition, Holy Week is really only holy when God is present.
So around Wellington Square, we protect the week from meetings, from business, from the routine. Holy Week is treasured for its’ opportunity to break from the usual routine, and instead engage in activities that will center us in the events of this last week of Jesus’ life. One part of the specialness of this week is the coming together with Christ followers from other congregations and traditions. This is a 30 year tradition shared with other congregations: United, Baptist, Presbyterian. Check the brochure for dates and times. This year they’re being held at Burlington Baptist. Next year Holy Week events will be here at Wellington Square. Location doesn’t matter, as long as God is present and the Holy is hallowed.
