May 4 "Happy Anniversary"

Since May 1st 1964, Wellington Square has evolved, endured, changed and grown. I think you could tell the story of our 44 years in 3 chapters, with a fourth chapter beginning to be written.
Chapter one is about the first 18 years, when St Paul’s United and Trinity United consolidated into the new Wellington Square congregation and grew. Chapter two covers from 1982 to 1995, years of challenge –with the sad loss of Dr. Pritchard, much turmoil in the wider United Church, and Wellington Square struggling to stay stable and healthy. It is a chapter about perseverance and endurance through hardship.
By ’96 the leadership here was ready for a fresh start. Since then, with a combination of renewed spiritual commitment, and experimenting and stretching our practices in worship, children’s ministry, missions and more, we have written a new chapter –for many of us it’s been great fun to be part of.
I propose that we start thinking about the next chapter. The building renewal is on track. It’ll soon be old news. That’s bricks and mortar, to give us the tools to care for people, build faith, serve God’s world. Therefore, the next chapter ought to be about continuing to be the church we want to be.
To Know Christ, and to Make Him Known.
We want to KNOW Him –closely, intimately, constantly. Our lives make better sense, and are better lived when Jesus is our role model, our best friend and THE Living Presence we welcome into each moment.
We also make Christ known –to friends and neighbours, and to people everywhere as we serve their hurts and their needs. The church we want to be has people who are tight with God, so that they live with a joy, a confidence and a serving love that attracts others into this wonderful life.
