June 8 "The Life That is Truly Life"

“For godliness with contentment is a great gain. For we brought nothing into this world and we can take nothing out of it … take hold of the life that is truly life.” — I Timothy 6: 6,7,19

Wellington Square took two very positive steps forward this week. Firstly, Rev. Heather Weaver-Orosz has begun to return to work. As she comes off her medical leave, recovering from C-difficile, she will increase her work toward regular part-time ministry. We are very happy for her, and I am relieved for us. She will have a positive impact. The second positive step was taken at Tuesday evening’s Congregational Meeting, which had a good atmosphere throughout. Because it was an official meeting of the congregation, with an important decision being made, details were recorded. There were 132 people who signed the attendance sheet. The vote went 88% YES to proceed forward to tenders with the revised Sketch Plan (with a few abstentions). The meeting included a financial report from Russ Jackson for the Capital Campaign. Russ confirmed that we had achieved $2 million in gifts and pledges. Greg Eade then offered a reassuring report on the bridge financing available. Then, knowing what monies we had available, Jeff Weir presented a splendid PowerPoint, with commentary. Jeff explained the adjustments that had been made to the building plan, to reduce the scope of work to match the financial resources. The Q & A was followed by the vote for approval. The key questions and comments were about choir concerns, and seeking reassurance that GraceLand’s needs were being met with the new plan. One or two concerns expressed sent a message about the congregation’s overall finances. The Board and Trustees are committed to working on this church growing its ministries in a healthy and financially viable manner. By 8:45 we were pretty well finished, although people lingered, talked and visited for another half hour. A very good night. The process now continues. Sometime in the fall after contractors tender their bids, we will have another Congregational Meeting for final approval. Stay tuned.
