If you point these things out to others, you will be a good minister of Christ Jesus, brought up in the truth of the faith and of the good teaching that you have followed. Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives’ tales; rather, train yourself to be godly. For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come. This is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance (and for this we labour and strive), that we have put our hope in the living God, who is the Saviour of all people, and especially those who believe. — I Timothy 4:6-10
We always have a lot to rejoice about in this faith family. Today we’re celebrating Katie’s 25th anniversary as a minister. Over that time she has served several United Churches — in the Windsor and London areas, and for the last 15 years, in Hamilton and now Burlington. What a contribution Katie has made, to numerous congregations, and to so many lives over these years! Stick around after the service to offer congratulations and participate in the celebration.
This week Wellington Square leaders have also made a significant contribution to a MAJOR church conference held in Toronto. Friday evening our Gathering Band led the worship music for over 700 conference participants. During Friday and Saturday over 215 participants have attended workshops led by members of the Wellington Square team, on subjects such as dynamic children’s ministry (Heather Mackey), worship music (Jean Gresham, Ryan Miller and Drew Maxwell), “Changing your Church without Killing It” (Drew, Orville and Marg Torrance) and the vision and theology of a healthy church (Orville).
What’s next? During the summer we’re getting ready for the church year ahead. We have a Congregational Meeting set for Tuesday evening, July 8 at 7:00 pm. Unusual date, isn’t it?
That’s because our normal agenda for the June meeting was replaced by the discussion and decision on the next steps toward renovation and expansion of our building. Details were shared about adjusting our plans to fit our budget, and how to get our needs met with minimum disruption and expense.
Lots of good questions were asked and answered. A vote showed 88% of participants in favour going to the next step — seeking contractors firm bids. When the results of that are in, sometime in the fall, we will gather again to decide whether and when to begin the work.
Meantime — at the Congregational Meeting on July 8 we will elect our team of servant-leaders for the year ahead, and approve a working budget.
As always, the goal around here is to be a healthy church where your own faith can keep you strong in today’s world, and also where you can bring your friends —‘To Know Christ and to Make Christ Known’.
Blessings to all … ORVILLE
