A few words from Orville for August 17

My favourite memory of this summer will probably be of my 82 year old father dancing in a circle with two of his grand-daughters and a daughter in law at my niece’s wedding. Marvelous! It was celebraton and happy silliness, all rolled together.
Two weeks ago, when we studied the Parable of the Wise and Foolish Bridesmaids (Matthew 25:1-13), I shared some accumulated insights. Several friends commented about them afterward, so I offer them now in print…
I’ve noticed that every weeding has its own flavour and energy;
After thirty years officiating at hundreds of weddings I have observed much, and come to these conclusions:

The amount of money spent on a wedding has no impact on the future happiness of the couple or the length of their marriage.
The size of the wedding party has no impact on the future happiness of the couple, or the length of the marriage.
Most couples, Nancy & I included, really have no clue what we’re signing up for when we get married; we’ve little concept of what we’re getting into.

Couples ought to focus as much on their marriage, as they do on their wedding. The decades ahead need more attention then the day itself.

Marriage can be the greatest blessing and bonus in any life; it can also bring the biggest pain and hardship to any life. If a suitable partner appears in your life – get married; it’s worth the risk, and the cost, and certainly deserves a joyous celebration.

May God bless and protect all the wedding couples you celebrate with this year…
