This is a significant Sunday around the Square. Today is the last ‘official’ day of work for two members of our staff team, Brian and Tania.
Brian Vickers is delivering the message at both our services –that parable of challenge –‘The Rich Fool’. Brian has been with us for 10 months, bridging us over the medical leave of Heather Weaver-Orosz. Brian has given steady servant leadership in pastoral visiting, conducting special services, organizing and co-ordinating the development of future Adult Faith programs. He’ll stay here as a continuing member, until he begins a ministry ‘internship’ sometime in ’09. I’ve been grateful for his quiet fervour for God, his steady, methodical organizing abilities. And I’ll miss his wry humour in meetings, and his unique stacatto chuckle. Thanks Brian. May the next steps toward ministry flow smoothly and in a timely fashion.
We’re also releasing Tania Vroenhoven toward music leadership with our friends in Waterdown. St James United is just starting to update their musical worship styles. They know they need someone like Tania to help them with that. As well as her organ and piano skills, she may be playing some guitar, and developing a ‘contemporary’ worship band. Tania has done everything we asked her to do, with choirs and bells for our 11a.m. worship. Now God is asking her to do a little more, and a wee bit differently, in this new setting. So we can release her toward this new work, with our gratitude and our blessing. Thanks Tania.
All of this means there continue to be changes and evolving in our leadership. For instance, this week the Board approved of Tim Tufford leading a team of singers and musicians who will co-ordinate our worship music at 11a.m. (Thanks to Tim, Klaus, Lindsay, Pam, Jane & Nancy). They will keep us singing during the weeks ahead, while a ‘Search Committee’ (also approved by the Board) will define the job, the role and the direction of music leadership needed for our 11a.m. service.
Furthermore, when Rhonda, our Youth Ministries Coordinator, headed off to mission work, we began the process of finding new leadership. There are several steps including involving supervision from the wider church (Halton Presbytery). A committee was appointed including representatives from the youth group, parents, GraceLand, the Board, and others. This week, interviews were conducted with 3 candidates, one of whom may become our new Director of Youth Ministries. Stay tuned.
As you read this on Sunday morning, I hope I’m worshipping in an Anglican or United Church up in Muskoka. This is the transition week, as families return from vacation, schools open up, and church programs and groups begin to reconvene.
As summer winds down, and autumn weeks begin, let Jesus’ reign in this place, and may the Holy Spirit direct and empower all we do together.
With love,
ORVILLE
