…about trying new things in a new year. I’ve been thinking about reserving time to be quiet and alone. December, for a lot of us, has more events, and activities than any other time of the year. There are also many TV specials, great old movies, programs and concerts. My audio-visual senses can be almost over stimulated.
I don’t want to be brain dormant, but I do want to try different sources for my thinking. I’m thinking of getting back to reading –alone with a good book, or some thoughtful writing, maybe my spirit will pick up something new, or receive cognitive stimulation from an alternative pathway.
Most of us don’t read enough, nor do we read things that will stretch, inform or inspire. So let me invite you to read in 2009. What?
Start with a little bit of Bible. A team from a dozen United Churches, are writing brief intro’s and comments on each chapter of the New Testament. Pick up a copy at the info table, or have them e-mailed to you weekly. E-mail: Contact
What else to read? Some scintillating good books in the church library. I’m a big fan of anything by John Ortberg –“When the Game Is Over –It ALL Goes Back in the Box” and “God is Closer Than you Think”. There’s also been some critics of Christianity have made headlines attacking faith. Our library has some GREAT books with answers and a defense of intelligent, reasoned, balanced faith. Try Tim Kellers, or D’Souza’s. And there’s lots of fun novels –I’m a fan of the Mitford series. Ask your librarian –they’ll find you something good.
Turn off the TV for 1\2 hour a day. Start something new in your brain. This year, Read a little more.
