I've Been Thinking...

…that we witnessed an unforgettable moment of history this week. Every generation has historical events that are landmarks. They are held in common by all, and remain in memory for a lifetime. Pearl Harbour, JFK in Dallas, Sept 11, 2001. Anyone living during those events can probably recall details and images for the rest of their lives. So this week the world witnessed the Inauguration of the new American President. What was different about this moment is that it was not a sudden and tragic occurrence. Rather it was planned and prepared for, participated and celebrated. We paused the workday, gathered in front of a TV, witnessed history. There are many things to celebrate and be hopeful about in this Inauguration. Thinking about all of this from a faith perspective, I am struck that what makes Obama different is that he brings the promise of a morality that is deeper and more complete than his two predecessors. Bill Clinton seemed to pay attention to many issues of justice, equality, environmental and social integrity. But his personal life was deeply flawed and a disappointment to many. George W. Bush seemed to be true to a personal morality, but his worldview and policies seemed narrow minded and short-sighted.
In Barack Obama we may see a man who combines both personal integrity with political intelligence and compassion. And so we have hope. The Lord be with him.
And also with you. ORVILLE
