February 1 - The Freedom in Forgiveness

Perhaps the reason he was separated from you for a little while was that you might have him back for good … If he has done you any wrong or owes you anything, charge it to me.
— Philemon 15, 18

For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures.
— I Corinthians 15:3

You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly … But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
— Romans 5:6,8

I’ve been thinking …

... that I might be part of a movement of Heinz Christians. The label on Heinz ketchup says “57 varieties” (of products.) A mutt was called a Heinz dog because it had no clear distinct gene lines — multiple varieties. I’m thinking a similar trend is happening in the faith. At one time, a Catholic and Protestant would rarely mix or worship together, Baptists seemed a little rigid, and Pentecostals were just weird. That flawed perception is fading. This week I’ve seen the wonderful openness that is developing and the blend that is happening. Last Sunday’s City Wide Praise and Prayer service generated a lot of goodwill. I received e-mails from people in four different churches. Here’s a sample: “I just want to say how much I appreciated the service last night. It was a blessed event with terrific singing, wonderful fellowship, and sincere worship and prayer.” “… wonderful to be in God’s presence and sense His work in all of our lives and in this community.” “I feel that every City Wide Prayer and Worship night gets better and better. The spirit was so evident again last night. What a wonderful sense of worship.” “What a beautiful service, it filled me up!” Some of you know that when I’m away from here, I love to get to different churches. It’s fascinating and fun to experience Jesus’ team in all our variety of forms and expressions. I think we Christians ought to have a curiosity and an affection toward all our sister churches. So next time you’re out of town, stretch a bit. Make the effort to attend a worship service different from your familiar comfort zone. Like me, you’ll probably learn and be enlarged, and still rejoice when you get back here. I like the others — but I love it here. Blessings … ORVILLE

Communion Sunday Collection for the Crisis Care Fund

Building Partnerships, Rebuilding Lives | This Sunday we invite you to contribute to our Crisis Care Fund — a vital financial resource, used with prayerful discernment by your ministry team. It allows us to provide care and hope for those in our wider community as they cope with some of life’s harshest realities. Through this Fund, we are also able to offer significant, ongoing support with a growing list of community partners, including Salvation Army and Compassion Society — frontline ministries committed to breaking the cycle of poverty and abuse. Our prayer is for a day when such a fund will have no use … and we pray, until that day arrives, you will continue to contribute generously.
