… about something I read this week in The Shack, the scintillating novel that 30 of us are reading and discussing together. In the story, Mack is experiencing a mind-boggling weekend. Debating with God, walking on water… He wonders if he’s dreaming, or going insane. In a face-to-face conversation, Jesus tells him, “Mack, there is far more going on here than you have the ability to perceive. Let me assure you, all of this is very much real, far more real than life as you’ve known it.”
Celtic Christians from Ireland talk about the wonderful mystery of another unseen world. We are separated from it by a veil, that screens our vision. The Irish speak of ‘the thin places’ – those moments, or experiences or places when we humans catch a glimpse, or reach through and touch the mystery on the other side.
Mack is told, “You see very little, even though for a human you see very well.” What does it take to improve our spiritual vision?
Today is the first Sunday of Lent, a season when we are intentional about drawing back the veil – and experiencing the Holy. These next 6 weeks are an opportunity to do something specific, to experience the mystery of God in new ways.
Unlike other years, we have no special study guides. We ask that you continue to read through the New Testament and ponder the questions that are offered each week in the commentaries New Testament in a Year
