Here’s a modest proposal for the New Year. It does not involve losing weight or starting to exercise or being kind to neighbors or in-laws, important as those efforts may be. Rather it is to intentionally take responsibility for your spiritual life. Recent research is showing that many long-time church people go through ups and downs in their faith life. Regular worship helps, a Bible study or discussion group can also deepen connections to God.
However, programs and events aren’t nearly as effective as personal spiritual exercises: prayer, scripture reading, hospitality and service to others, sacrificial giving, practicing forgiveness and compassion. Nothing helps being a better follower of Jesus than spending time with Him, and putting your faith in action. —
