An update and glimpse into the life of Rhonda Elgersma.
Where: Ensenada, Mexico at the Ensenada Outreach Center (EOC), YUGO Ministries.
What: Camp Coordinator. (aka team coordinator, worship leader, intern mentor, volunteer coordinator, videographer, web designer, chapel leader, teacher, team builder, encourager, question answerer…)
Why: to love and serve people…because we are called to…because the world needs a revolution…
How: The programs and ministries we organize are merely a means to pour ourselves into people. They are tangible offerings of love. It is our hope at the EOC that people’s basic needs are met – food, shelter, clothing… love, hope, joy. We partner with over 100 pastors and local churches, as well as building relationships with local government and social services. These men and women are our front line workers. They truly know the needs of their people and how to effectively care for them. And then we connect teams from Canada and USA with these local organizations. The teams help equip, empower, and provide resources to aid them in their work. We build homes, runs children’s programs, educate, facilitate feeding programs, distribute clothing, run medical clinics… the opportunities are great and the needs are even greater.
As I approach my first full year living and working in Mexico, there are many things I can reflect upon. I think the biggest learning I’ve gained is that people are people. I live in a diverse community – diverse in culture, approaches to faith, ages, and of course diverse in economic status. I have friends who are poor. homeless. recovering drug addicts. dreaming adolescents. pastors. etc. etc. But despite all these variations… they are people. People who need to be loved and encouraged. Many people I serve have needs that I am able to offer my gifts, talents, and resources to. I cannot help everyone, or help solve everyone’s problems… but I can love as best I can. I can see people as people… just like me, just like you. Offer them hope, dignity, and love. These are my people now…. these are the people God has called me to serve. They are probably different than your people. But the point is to respond to the call God has put on your heart… to love and care for the people in your life.
Even though I am living and serving in another country, know my heart is still connected to you all here at Wellington Square. I am so grateful for the relationship this church has with myself and the overall ministry in Mexico. I cannot be doing this work without the financial support, prayers, and encouragement of you all. Thank you my brothers and sisters.
