“Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony.” — Colossians 3:14

Confirmands and Mentors
So ten young people are being ‘Confirmed’ Sunday. That means they’re declaring themselves open to God and welcoming Jesus into their lives. Are they unusual? A dwindling few? Maybe. They probably all have friends who’ve never been inside a church, or thought about God. And yet …
These ‘Confirmation’ teens are not unusual. They’re just ahead of the game. The vast majority of adult Canadians are connected to a church. Canadian sociologist Reg Bibby, who has been studying trends in the religious belief and practices of Canadians for 3 decades says, “Catholic and Protestant groups continue to be ‘the market choice’ of almost eight in ten Canadians.”
Furthermore, the older we get, the more life throws experiences at us that make us ask ‘God questions.’ Bibby notes that two-thirds of those who early in their life reported having no religion, at some point undergo a spiritual awakening or transformation. “Having ‘no religion’ often is not particularly functional and frequently only temporary.”
So these teens are ahead of the game. They’re getting started with God at the front end of their earthly run. Somewhere down the calendar, that’s going to make them stronger and wiser. And maybe they’ll pass the faith on to a friend who missed out when they were young.
