I expect that as you read this, I’m on a plane flying west. With the speed of jets, and change of time zones, by noon Sunday I’ll be in Kelowna, B.C. singing in worship, or sitting in meetings of our United Church’s General Council. The next 8 days will be spent thinking, praying, discussing and voting about decisions that will shape and influence our denomination for three years and beyond. I am truly looking forward to the experience. Please pray for the church in Canada –that we wise, effective and joyful servants for Jesus. You can check out details of what’s happening on the Church website at GC40.united-church.ca Because I’m away these weeks, I’m getting my offering envelope in early. I hope you will too, because the work of the church (and expenses) still continue; your gifts to God are used diligently and carefully through the summer and all year long. Can I highlight a special opportunity? Some of you will remember this church celebrated and supported my 25th anniversary of ordination as a minister. Back in ’05 I had a 10 week exchange to a Methodist church in England, for which I am still grateful. Now Katie has achieved this milestone of a quarter century in ministry. She is hoping to go for two weeks to a ministers renewal conference this fall. Will you join me in helping covering the cost, with a gift to a ‘25th anniversary fund’? Thanks. I love being in this church, and I am grateful for all the support you give to your ministers. Blessings & love… ORVILLE
Earth’s crammed with heaven,
And every common bush afire with God.
And only he who sees takes off his shoes.
The rest sit round it and pluck blackberries.
— Elizabeth Barrett Browning
“Thank God no matter what happens. This is the way God wants you who belong to Christ Jesus to live.”
—1 Thessalonians 5: 18, The Message
It happened that as he made his way toward Jerusalem, he crossed over the border between Samaria and Galilee. As he entered a village, ten men, all lepers, met him. They kept their distance but raised their voices, calling out, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!” Taking a good look at them, he said, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.” They went, and while still on their way, became clean. One of them, when he realized that he was healed, turned around and came back, shouting his gratitude, glorifying God. He kneeled at Jesus’ feet, so grateful. He couldn’t thank him enough—and he was a Samaritan. Jesus said, “Were not ten healed? Where are the nine? Can none be found to come back and give glory to God except this outsider?” Then he said to him, “Get up. On your way. Your faith has healed and saved you.”
