Sunday, November 1 "Saint Osceola of Hattiesburg"

Christ has no body on earth but yours, no hands but yours, no feet but yours. Yours are the eyes through which Christ’s compassion for the world is to look out; yours are the feet with which He is to go about doing good; and yours are the hands with which He is to bless us now. — Saint Teresa of Avila

“I heard a voice thunder from the Throne: “Look! Look! God has moved into the neighbourhood, making His home with men and women! They’re His people, He’s their God. He’ll wipe every tear from their eyes. Death is gone for good – tears gone, crying gone, pain gone – all the first order of things gone.” — Revelation 21: 3-4, The Message

I’ve Been Thinking…

about Halloween memories. For kids this might be the second most exciting day of the year. Trick or Treat! Candy, candy, candy. My dream when growing up was to get to every house in the little town I lived in (Dashwood, ON). Me and my friends knew all the best houses to go to — for the best candy. Back then I had NO clue what last night or today were really about. It’s All Saints Day today, and last evening was All Hallow’s Eve. It’s all about ‘the communion of saints.’ It links us to all those people of faith who’ve gone before us. Yes, the famous ones — St Paul, St Augustine, etc. But what about St Violet Bender? She was a cheerful, round lady who lived on a farm outside of Dashwood, so I never trick-or-treated at her house. But she told me the stories of the ’Good Shepherd’ (that was Jesus) and the lost lamb (that was me) and she taught me to sing ‘Jesus Loves Me,’ and slowly over time it sunk in. Violet Bender helped shape my life. She’s one of the saints. So is my grandmother who prayed for me every day until she died. I conducted her funeral, and I cried at her funeral. She’s one of the saints. You have saints you can remember too. Think back — who loved you? Who lived God’s love toward you? Who served and supported the church you grew up in? They’re all the saints. So today — we remember all the people of faith who’ve gone before us. The Gifts & Memorials Fund has been a way for people to say thanks — to memorialize someone they’ve loved and lost a little while. The Fund has been used for many good projects around the church — both for the building, for technology and for people. I hope that today, you’ll remember a person of faith from your past; and I hope that you’ll regularly contribute to the Gifts & Memorial Fund as you thank God for the saints in your life.
