“His wife said to Job, ”Do you still persist in your integrity? Curse God and die.” But he said to her, ”Shall we receive the good at the hand of God, and not receive the bad?” — Job 2:9,10
…about the courage and the suffering that war brings. Last week I spent 5 hours at the Civil War battlefield of Gettysburg, and saw the historical remnants of a great battle. This week we will remember the veterans and the generation who endured the World Wars of the last century.
Thankfully I am too young to have experienced that war. But we all know veterans, and have family members who remember. A few years before his death my preaching professor from Queens, Bob Mumford told this story: “I remember a few summers ago walking on a Nova Scotia beach with a man who has been a friend for 30 years now, a lawyer, a veteran of the RCAF, a Minister’s son, a man with great mental toughness. We talked about the war years and I shall not forget one of his sentences. After a long silence he said: “In many ways I enjoyed the war years. I was young and my blood was up. Now that it’s long gone and I know something of what it cost, I shake. But I’m still glad that I went and I’m still convinced that my generation can claim at least that we bought the world some time.””
So as the poppies appear on lapels we remember with gratitude those who went overseas with their blood high and their idealism strong, and those who did not return and those who ‘bought the world some time.”
Remember with gratitude. And pray for peace. Amen.
