When Job’s three friends heard about all the terrible things that had happened to him, each of them came from his home — Eliphaz of Teman, Bildad of Shuah, Zophar from Naama. They had agreed they would go together to sympathize with Job and comfort him. When they saw him from a distance, they didn’t even recognize him. They cried out loud and wept, and each one of them tore his own clothes in grief. They threw dust on their heads. Then they sat down on the ground with him for seven days and seven nights. No one said a word to him because they saw that he was in such great pain. — Job 2:11-13

that sometimes I don’t give you enough info. Two weeks ago, Rev. Heather W-O gave a brilliant message (as usual!) on All Saints Sunday. That day I wrote about everyday saints, and tied it to the Gifts & Memorials Fund (G & M). I realize I need to say more.
The G & M Fund has been a long time part of Wellington Square’s financial world, separate from the regular budget and Sunday offerings. When someone dies, instead of flowers, people will make a ‘memorial gift’; it is in memory of the life of a friend or loved one. Also, faithful members have left a portion of their estate to God’s work here, through the G & M Fund.
A few years ago, after one of our members’ father died, the son received over $100,000 from the estate. He wanted to ‘tithe’ to God, so he gave a tenth of his inheritance to this church. When he handed me the envelope he said, “I don’t want this money sitting around in some bank. I want it doing God’s work.”
So that gift embarked on multiple duties: Part of it bought 100 Bibles that were given out here, part of it sent two teens on a mission trip to Mexico, part of it funded several children to church camp, some of it bought a VCR for GraceLand, and some of it helped a single mom get back on her feet. All service to the community of Christ. That’s the Gifts & Memorials Fund.
So I hope you’ll remember that sometimes you can be doing God’s work, and helping people — just by making a gift, just by writing a cheque.
