… about a comment from a Dragon. Kevin O’Leary, a business guy on CBC’s Dragon’s Den’ recently said “I don’t care what kind of corporate warrior you are, every Canadian needs to give 3, 4 or 5% of their income off the top to charity. It does good things, changes our communities, and makes YOU feel better.”
I’m convinced he’s onto something. What a difference it can make, and how satisfying it feels, to live beyond yourself.
Of course, for people of faith Kevin’s only half right. The biblical standard begins at 10%. As a general guideline, use up to 90% of your income for yourself, and channel a tenth beyond yourself.
That’s some of the thinking behind the 10-10-80 budget plan for our church. Our goal is to direct a minimum of 10% of offerings toward needs beyond this congregation; then also, out of a second tenth, to develop a capital reserve fund for ‘Building Maintenance’; and finally to have enough generous giving to ‘operate’ the church from the 80% of our offerings.
That’s our goal, and this year we’re beginning to work toward it. I think it’s brilliant, and wish we had thought of it a decade ago.
Kind of makes us spiritual Dragons, don’t you think? It lifts our vision toward an entrepreneurial spirit – stretching to achieve more, venturing into new territory as a church, and accomplishing bigger things for God and God’s world. We’re into a period of ‘due diligence,’ sorting out a few details of our action plan, but I’m convinced it’s right. Let’s go for it!
