“A Parched Heart in the Ultimate Thirst Quencher”
“…Jesus… said ‘I am thirsty.’ A jar full of sour wine was standing there. So they put a sponge full of the wine on a branch of hyssop and held it to his mouth.” —John 19:28,29
How precious is the reassurance of our faith. And how its value becomes most apparent in times of crisis and challenge.
Weeks can roll along uneventfully, with routine work, household chores, projects and people, recreation and hobby. God, church, faith are sort of there, yet without great enthusiasm or consequence. You do the church thing, as part of the routine.
Then a week will come that leaves you ‘gobsmacked’ – Reeling; Aching; numb.
That’s when the routine turns into anything but ordinary. God and faith become essential. The steady ground on which to crawl and the compass that guides you forward. And for many, it’s not just what you believe that is so valuable. It is a Presence. The ONE who holds you and holds the future is intimately acquainted with your situation.
The prophet Isaiah records God as saying, “I have called you by name, you are mine” (Isaiah 43:1) It never ceases to astound me that God knows my name, and that from without, God calls to the depths within, drawing me to life in all its fullness. I believe that God intimately knows your name, and has called and will call you again on a level beyond the audible.
A woman I know experienced this dawning realization. She said, “At that moment something shifted in me. A pebble dropped from head to heart to gut with a little splash.”
It made all the difference. Not that the crisis disappears. Rather suddenly you are not alone, and a peace descends upon you with the Presence. This week and every week –‘The Lord Be With You’. AMEN.
