Members of the Board
All members of the Board must be members in good standing of Wellington Square United Church and be active in the life and work of Wellington Square.
Role
The primary duty of a member of the board of Wellington Square United Church is to provide direction and leadership to the Ministries and Operations of the church. Board members, through prayer and faith, are responsible for developing and upholding the strategic direction for WSUC and ensuring all ministries are aligned toward successful achievement of our vision and mission. Board members build community through consensus, and uphold in prayer the life and concerns of the congregation of Wellington Square United Church.
Board members fulfill the duties as listed in the United Church of Canada's Manual. These duties include the following:
Visioning: Safeguarding the church's mission/vision/values and reviewing it semi-annually - Long-term planning - Setting policy on WSUC Issues - Studying and researching ideas and plans presented - Short-term planning framework - Decision-making on direction of church, key investments to be made, projects, organizational changes
Resource management: Ensuring prudent and proper management of church's resources - Approval of budgets and plans ensuring they are in line with vision and critical success factors, and presentation to congregation for final approval - Approval of new programs/fund-raising projects - Recruit and select lay people for quadrant leader roles
·Leadership: Work closely with Ministries and Operations team coordinators, providing support, affirmation and guidance - Connect with lay leaders to provide support, affirmation and guidance - Ensure operations are efficient and effective
Communication: Collect and disseminate information from/to congregation and communicate to congregation on all key issues - Prepare recommendations and communications to congregation
The Person
Board members of Wellington Square United Church must believe in and pursue a faith-filled life, seeking Jesus and honouring God in lifestyle and relationships. They demonstrate, in their day-to-day lives, these important qualities:
Character traits (based on 1 Timothy 3:27 and Titus 1:6-9) such as wisdom, patience, generosity and honesty, and are known for exercising fair, impartial judgments and leading a well-balanced life
Competence in such areas as communication, decision-making, conflict-resolution and strategic planning
Chemistry that enables them to communicate and work well with others, valuing diversity and effectively building consensus with teamwork and consideration of others
Courage to make difficult decisions and to uphold God's word in the church
Calling from the Holy Spirit to become a director and to use their spiritual gifts of leadership, faith, wisdom and discernment
